Ah, the dollar store. No matter how much money you have, it’s a fun place to shop. It has everything you could possibly want, whether your looking for cheap home decor, craft supplies, or discount food. And the exact same food you would pay for at the full priced grocery stores, for a fraction of the cost, I might add. The dollar store is the best way to save some of your hard-earned money!
While there are a lot of amazing deals, there are also a few things that aren’t worth your money. This ultimate dollar store guide will help you make the right selections on your next visit.
1) Party supplies
One of the best things at the dollar store is their colorful party supplies! This applies to children’s and adult’s parties alike, but they’re especially good for throwing baby showers and kids parties. You can get everything from themed cutlery and table cloths at affordable prices.
2) Stocking stuffers and party favors
The holidays call for a lot of gift giving for all your family and friends, and the cost can quickly add up! For little filler gifts and trinkets, the dollar store has small toys, candy and other treats to make your goodie bags stand out from the rest.
3) Great glasses
Glasses don’t have to be expensive! Stop shelling out hundreds for branded frames. Especially if you’re like me and you know you’re going to lose or break them. The dollar store has various reading glasses, sunglasses, and even some clear frames if you don’t need a prescription but want the look. They’re a little more than a dollar, but still infinitely cheaper than a pair of Ray Bans.
Greetings cards are insanely expensive. Especially considering they’re appreciated for a fleeting moment, and then sit on someone’s mantle for a few weeks before ultimately getting thrown in the bin. But they’re still an important gesture. So the best way to cheat the system is to buy your cards at the dollar store! You can find cards that are just as nice as the expensive brands for a couple bucks.
5) Plastic flowers
Fresh flowers are a lovely addition to the home, but have a short life span and tend to be very expensive. If you want to add a pop of color to your home, or decorate for a party, you can get fake flowers for cheap at the dollar store. Your guests will be none the wiser! They’re also a great resource for floral-themed crafts. I once used them to decorate my outfit for a music festival.
Socks usually live a pretty short life. Either they get swallowed up by the washing machine (seriously, where do they go?!) or they get worn out. And a new pack will easily run you ten or more dollars. Especially if you’re trying to keep up with enough socks for children’s growing feet, it can be really expensive. But the dollar store has a ton of comfortable socks for cheap. Problem solved!
7) Holiday decorations
The moment something becomes labelled for a “special occasion” we’re expected to act like money is no object. But guess what? It is! We all love to add a little pizzazz to our home with holiday decorations but jeesh, they’re expensive. Fortunately, the dollar store’s got you. You can find festive, yet affordable touches to bring holiday cheer.
Okay this may seem oddly specific, but let’s be honest, Sharpies are incredible. Great for crafting, school supplies, and much more. They’re also extremely expensive. But the dollar store doesn’t just have a discount imitation brand – they have true Sharpies for a fraction of the regular price you’d see at a craft or office supply store. I would classify this as a life hack. Buying Sharpies at full price is for suckers!
9) Gift wrapping supplies
Gift wrapping paper is beautiful, and there’s nothing better than having a stock of different prints and patterns to pull out for different occasions. Well, the only thing that may be better than that is the feeling of pure bliss when your scissors glide across said paper. But for something that gets thrown out after just one use, it’s unjustly expensive. But you don’t have to turn to old newspaper for your wrapping supplies, the dollar store has everything you need. And not just paper, but bows, gift bags, tissue paper, ribbons – you name it.
The dollar store cares about your dental hygiene. They’ve got toothbrushes and floss, but better yet, they have floss picks. If you’ve never tried one of those babies, oh man. Pick them up the next time you’re at the dollar store and your life will never be the same again. They come in bulk packs of about 50 and will only cost a dollar or two. Disclaimer: they don’t work so well for people who’ve had braces and still have a bar behind their teeth, sorry.
11) Air fresheners
Whether you need air fresheners for your home, office, car or elsewhere, the dollar store has it for cheap! Some air fresheners can run close to ten bucks at the pharmacy or grocery store. If you go looking for essential oil sticks at a speciality store, forget it. But the dollar store has it all, including the regular brands, so you’re not sacrificing quality.
You can get over-the-counter painkillers like Advil and Tylenol at the dollar store. They also carry generic brands of ibuprofen at even lower prices. It’ll help you save big time.
13) Pregnancy tests
Sure, this one is a little niche. But everything pregnancy related is so expensive. So whether you’re eager and trying for a baby and want to stock up on tests while you wait for good news, or something didn’t go as planned, you can get the answer you’re looking for at the dollar store for much cheaper than if you went to the pharmacy. They also have ovulation tests and other similar products.
14) Chip clips
These aren’t exactly super durable, even when you buy the expensive brands. And they always get lost at the back of drawers, or accidentally tossed in the garbage. But they’re so useful! So they’re worth having around, and you can find them at the dollar store.
For anyone who’s just moved to a new country, into your dorm room, or maybe to your first apartment, you’ll need dishes. You can get an entire set for about $20 compared to the hundreds you would otherwise spend. Even at low price stores like Ikea, it’s nothing compared to the prices at the dollar store. This also goes for cheaper disposable dishes for parties – red solo cups, plastic champagne flutes, summer iced tea pitchers and much more can be found at affordable prices.
If you think about it, you probably have a minimum of 5 different soaps in your house at any given time. And that’s being conservative. Especially these days with extra vigorous hand-washing and hand sanitizers being so important! But in addition to those there’s soap for dishes, laundry, shampoo, body wash, face cleansers, and more. And they’re not cheap at the grocery store. But life hack – you can pick up all of these things at the dollar store for a couple bucks.
17) Foam board
Whether it’s for a school project, or making a sign to exercise your First Amendment right to protest, you’ll need some foam board or other sturdy craft paper. It goes without saying that everything at speciality craft stores is expensive, but you can get the same supplies at the dollar store.
Spices are surprisingly expensive. It was one of the first things I noticed when I moved out on my own for the first time. But stocking up on pantry staples at the dollar store can save you an average of $3-5 dollars per container. That adds up quickly!
19) Kitchen roll
It’s not just the chip clips – the dollar store has a ton of useful kitchen supplies. I can’t imagine any reason to pay for brand name aluminum foil or parchment paper. So save your hard-earned dollars and get the generic brands instead.
I don’t want to encourage anyone to break any rules… but hot tip – there is no law against bringing your own snacks into the movie theatre. And I promise the 14 year old kid tearing ticket stubs isn’t going to chase you down and search your bag for contraband food.
SO, the next time you go to the movies, skip paying a premium for some Swedish berries and pick up your own candy at the dollar store first. Another benefit to this, is that you can mix and match as you please instead of being confined to one bag of overpriced candy. You’re welcome.
21) Picture frames
Again, those pesky craft and home decor stores charge a premium for basic things like picture frames. But the dollar store offers a range of different sizes, colours, and finishes. You can also get plain ones and decorate them yourself (with other dollar store supplies!).
22) Helium balloons
Who has their own helium machine? Probably not you. And renting one for a party is basically out of the question if you’re on a budget. But what is a party without balloons? Luckily you can get every colour and print you could imagine from the dollar store and they’ll even fill it with helium for you.
23) Glow sticks
Party stores carry glow sticks, but they’re definitely going to be expensive. You can get small or large packs at the dollar store for a lot less money. And the fun you can have with glow sticks isn’t limited to bracelets and necklaces. A trend that popped up when people were bored at home in the pandemic was to wear glow sticks and dance in the dark. I highly recommend it.
24) Aluminum cooking pans
Along with the other kitchen supplies already mentioned, aluminum cooking pans are another great purchase. Especially if you’re like me and hate dishes!
The dollar store actually has a nice selection of home decor and accent pieces. Takes these vases for example. They’re made with real glass (though there are also plastic versions available if you’re worried about your mischevous cat).
26) Coloring books
Trying to keep your kids busy? Want to give an easy yet creative gift? Coloring books are all the rage. And as with all books, coloring books can be painfully expensive. But not if you pick them up at the dollar store!
27) Cleaning products
If you have kids, pets, or anything white in your home, you’ll understand the importance of cleaning products. And if you need them frequently, the cost adds up really quickly! But the ol’ reliable dollar store has all the same products at discounted prices. What would we do without it?
28) Thank you cards
Thank you cards are just as important as your wedding invites, and surprise surprise… they’re not cheap. But you don’t need to visit an expensive stationery store to find classy thank you cards for less.
29) Wet wipes
These have never been more important, and for a while there were incredibly hard to come by. But they’re usually in stock these days and are great to have to help sanitize your car, or the counters of your home or office (or, home office). The prices may have gone up due to demand, but they’re still way cheaper at the dollar store than grocery stores.
Q-tips are useful for hygiene and even getting the perfect lines and shading when doing your make up. But they can be expensive. You can get bulk packs at the dollar store for way cheaper than the small ones you’d find at the grocery store. And they have both the brand and generic options in stock.
31) Craft supplies
This is a no brainer! Unless you’re a professional, dollar store quality craft supplies is good enough. And they have literally everything you could ever dream of. Sparkles, googley eyes, paints, brushes, canvases, pipe cleaners, gold leaf… you name it! I could go on forever.
32) Cleaning brushes
You should never have to spend a lot of money on something inherently disposable. That’s why shopping at the dollar store for things like cleaning brushes just makes sense. These get a lot of abuse, so you can stock up on many at a time and always have them in your pantry without paying a small fortune.
33) Plastic wrap
Plastic wrap can be used for so many DIY projects and can solve almost any kitchen problem. And you can get it at the dollar store on the cheap. Either the name brand at a significant discount, or the generic brands if you want to save even more money. It’s just plastic so I feel like this is an easy place to go as cheap as possible.
34) Scotch tape
Another household item with 100 different uses is Scotch tape. Gift wrapping, organizing, labelling, cleaning your keyboard, you name it, it does it all. And it can run upwards of $7 at an office supply store. Not even Elon Musk has that kind of money. I bet he buys his at the dollar store, and you should too.
35) Gardening supplies
Instead of wasting your time and money at a home building supply store, you can get basic tools and other supplies at the dollar store! Things like planters, shovels, gloves and more can all be found on the cheap. Maybe not one dollar, but as close as it gets. They even carry garden decorations like bird houses, decorative stones, wind chimes, and outdoor lighting.
The dollar store carries notebooks for all age groups. They have lined and graph paper books for students, agendas, and lots of different journals with printed covers. And, as you already know, they’re going to be cheap! Why spend money on an empty book?
37) Food storage
There is no such thing as the perfect Tupperware. But you may prefer glass to plastic, clear to solid, round to square. Well luckily for you, the dollar store has it all. They also carry some clothing storage solutions too!
If you visit a fancy home store, even something small and simple like a washcloth can cost a fortune. And yes, it may be tempting to opt for the cute “His” and “Hers” towels, or something made with soft plush fabric… but you don’t need it. Trust me. If you want something practical and affordable, hit the dollar store. They have a variety of different towels and clothes for both home and kitchen.
39) Coffee filters
It’s definitely cheaper to make coffee at home (have you ever added up your Starbucks bill for the week? It’ll scare you). But coffee filters aren’t exactly cheap and it adds to the overall cost of every cup. But you can buy bulk coffee filters at the dollar store, which obviously work just as well as the branded kind. And of course, the dollar store does sell coffee too but… I wouldn’t suggest it.
40) Puzzles and games
I was shocked as an adult to find the true price of games and puzzles. Having a stash of puzzles is a great way to entertain guests – or yourself – on a rainy day. But when it costs a fortune it’s hard to want to shell out the money. But the dollar store has a cheap variety of puzzles and some card games. That way, if you lose a piece, it won’t be as upsetting.
Now, for the items you want to avoid!
So as we’ve learned, the dollar store is an amazing place to pick up some essentials at a more affordable price. However, not everything that’s cheaper is necessarily of the same quality. It may seem like a good deal at the time, but you’ll later find your money was better spent on the real thing. Here are 15 things to avoid.
1) Spray bottles
You might think these are a safe purchase, but they won’t last in the long run. They often get jammed up quickly or leak if you accidentally knock them on their side. Sure, they may be cheaper than the grocery store bottles, but you’ll have to replace them more often and will ultimately spend more money on them!
The dollar store has some amazing school supplies, but crayons are not one of them. The cheap version they carry are too waxy, are weaker in color, and will snap like that. Not exactly kid friendly! This is definitely where restaurants get their crayons for kids menus, so if you’ve ever used those, you get it.
These are definitely wise to stay away from. If you don’t believe me, check the label next time you’re shopping. Some of them have warnings on them!! If they contain parabens, they can cause cancer so it’s not worth saving those few extra bucks if it’s going to make you sick. And if that wasn’t already enough to convince you, the quality of the lotion actually feels lower too.
4) Kitchen utensils
These are not worth it. Kitchen utensils are something you can keep for years and years if you buy the right products, so it’s worth the investment. If you buy from the dollar store, you’ll find your spatulas melt, ladels stain, and knives dull quickly. You don’t have to spend a fortune, but it’s worth shopping somewhere a little more upmarket for quality utensils.
I don’t even know why they stock these! Cheap electronics are always a disaster. They’re not just more likely to be deficient, they’re also more dangerous and can cause electrical issues. You don’t have to shell out for the $120 AirPods, but please don’t buy electronics at the dollar store.
These simply won’t be sturdy enough to take on any project larger than hanging a photo on the wall. The best place to find cheap but effective, sturdy tools, is a second hand shop. Otherwise, going to a standard home building store and paying a little extra for something new is worth the investment.
7) Cleaning bottles with nozzles
Yes, the dollar tree has some cheap cleaning supplies. And most of it is totally worth the buy. But any of the generic branded cleaning products will clog the nozzle before you’ve even used half of the bottle. So it’s better to keep an eye out for them on sale at a regular store instead.
There’s not many electronics that we can’t recharge these days. But maybe you want to fire up your old Game Boy, or your tv remote is dying. Then you’ll need some batteries. But it’s definitely not a good idea to pick these up on the cheap, because they simply won’t last as long.
9) Canned goods
There’s nothing inherently wrong with canned good at the dollar store. They won’t make you sick, they’re not toxic. But the catch, is that you’re not actually saving yourself any money! Canned goods are often hover around $1 at a regular grocery store, and all of those stores will carry both the brand products as well and their own house brand if you’re trying to save money.
For whatever reason, gum at the dollar store is about the same price as you’d find it anywhere else. Maybe because it’s so cheap to begin with. If you’re an avid chewer, check out Wal-Mart or Costco and buy in bulk to pay less.
11) Hair and skin products
You can probably get away with this if you don’t have fussy hair or sensitive skin. But the products at the dollar store won’t always be allergy tested, they may contain cancer-causing parabens, and just simply won’t treat your hair and skin as well as speciality products. You deserve better, so spending a little more on quality products is worth it. Your body will thank you.
I don’t know why anyone thought this was ever a good idea. I know it’s tempting to spend a dollar on meat… but ask yourself a question. Why and how can this cost $1? It can’t. Not if you plan on actually eating it. You could maybe consider feeding it to your pets but I wouldn’t even risk that if I were you.
13) School supplies
Hear me out – not all school supplies. You can get some great things like Sharpies and notebooks as mentioned previously. But you’ll notice some items aren’t actually that much cheaper than at a real stationery/office supply store, but the quality will still be lower. Bide a bit of time and wait for those back-to-school sales to get the best deals!
It’s tempting, yes. We all love candles and who wants to pay $15 for one like they’re priced in other stores? That’s crazy. But so is buying a cheap candle, because the smell won’t actually fill the room like you hope it will. The wax and oils are a lower quality and will melt, but not well. Look for sales, or buy in bulk for better deals on candles.
15) Pet food
There’s usually an entire aisle dedicated to pet supplies. And it seems like a good idea, but if you take a closer look the quality of the pet food they carry is very low. And your little furry friends deserve the best! You can always buy pet food in bulk, which will still save you money and be better for your pets overall. The dog and cat toys are another thing though – those are a pretty safe bet. Just don’t expect them to last too long.
The dollar store has so many things it’s hard to believe they can all be available for so cheap. But making wise choices is the hardest part. But now you know exactly what’s worth your hard earned money, and what isn’t. And even though it may seem arbitrary to save a few bucks here and there… every dollar counts! You bank account will thank you.

Lazy People Solutions That Defy Common Sense
There’s the right way of doing things, and then there’s the wrong way of doing things. But how can a solution be wrong when it’s faster? This is how.
Every day, we go through small internal battles. We argue with ourselves over doing things right or doing things fast. The 40 people ahead all opted to do things fast. And the consequences came even faster as a result!
It’s as good as new.
If you look closely, you’ll be able to see that some of the column uses new wood. Thanks to this restoration, the roof that the column’s holding up should stay in place for weeks. Warning: Do not play Jenga with this!
For once, the sockets are making the right expression
Drilling metal screws into the plugs? What could possibly go wrong? The weird thing about this one is that it actually took some effort to do something so stupid.
Calm down, there’s some plastic tape. No one could possibly walk over the gap with that tape in place. Right?
10+ People That Had No Idea How Attractive They Were Until They Worked To Improve Themselves
Sometimes when your health is out of balance you can’t see yourself clearly. When people struggle with something physical, like weight, they can’t always see how beautiful they really are. These people didn’t even realize how attractive they were until they worked on themselves, but now they can celebrate their appearances every day.
These 30 people have powerful stories, and their transformations are absolutely amazing. Their messages are so inspiring.
“I lost 100 lbs, and I feel great.”
“It took me 2 years and 3 months to get in shape. It sounds like a lot of time, but it was well worth it.”
“I made true friends, and they helped me to have a more active lifestyle. That’s how I managed to lose weight. Now I can communicate with any person.”
“The difference between these 2 photos is 4 years. And I was even used to not enjoying what I looked like.”
“Me when I was 19 and 21.”
“I was depressed because of the way I looked. I didn’t even want to live. But I decided that I was able to change everything, so I started losing weight… I feel great, and I’m enjoying my life!”
“I didn’t use to be really fat. I had a hard time choosing the right hairstyle.”
“I used to weigh 60 lb, now I weigh 90, and I keep working on my body.”
“3 years between these photos. Some people don’t believe that it’s me.”
“So much has changed in 3 years! Before, I didn’t get out much. I was very shy. Now we live in a time when changing your appearance is very easy.”
“Just 4 years, and this is what I’ve become (I’m on the right).”
“I didn’t do anything special, but I’m not ugly anymore.”
“I restored what was destroyed by 20 years of McDonald’s and Coke.”
“15 months later I finally have a chin! Now I’m doing everything I can to maintain my weight.”
“I lost 100 lb, and I keep working on my body.”

“This is my boyfriend at the age of 16 and 21. It’s hard to tell that it’s the same person.”
“I knew I owed it to my son to try to break the family tree of obesity. There are so many compromises to being an obese parent: I was simply forfeiting the ability to participate in so many wonderful moments.”
“As the pounds started to come off, I noticed a change, but others didn’t — until the day I appeared outside of my office standing up.”
“My goal is to train and inspire people to show them that the weight loss is possible.”

50 Cringeworthy Fashion Fails We Can’t Believe People Didn’t Notice
Not all of us are fashion experts. This is why we try to experiment and mix and match clothes to see if we can look more stylish. Unfortunately, the more we try to look more fashionable, the more we end up failing. The risky fashion choice we make often leaves us looking ridiculous and weird in other people’s eyes.
Fortunately, fashion disasters aren’t always bad. In fact, they can be transformed into little entertainment and also a warning for others to never try to copy them.
Here are the most cringe-worthy fashion fails you need to see this year:
1. Brown logo on white shoes
In theory, putting a brown logo on a white background will make a product look classy. In reality, a brown logo on white shoes just looks like bird poo from afar.
2. A not-so-comfortable evening dress
This is probably one of the most uncomfortable dresses you’ll see. I don’t think you’ll have a great time wearing this to a party or anywhere.
3. When you accidentally stepped on something
This is actually a good pair of shoes if you always walk on mud or dirt. You won’t have to worry about cleaning your shoes. Plus, its design can work as camouflage for when you accidentally stepped on your dog’s poo.
Will you give up or will you never give up? Well, it’s a good shirt to wear if you still can’t decide. At least, you’re letting other people know where you stand.
