You may think that life hacks are something new that people are freaking out about. But they have actually been around longer than you think. Some are even over 100 years old, but here’s the best part: many of them are still relevant.
If you think about it, it’s amazing. Life in 2019 would be unrecognizable to someone living in the early 19th century. Since not only have we had great technological advances, but our cultures have also evolved. We have women in politics, we fly through the skies to go on vacation, and we can talk to someone on the other side of the world with the push of a few buttons. But, despite the changes, many things remain.
Like our ancestors, we get splinters, wear glasses, and try to light matches on windy days. Sure, we also have smartphones that tell us the weather forecast for the week and now we travel by cars instead of horses. But these tricks from 100 years ago are still things that we can use even in the new millennium.
1. Get Out A Nasty Splinter With This Handy And Stylish Trick
The next time a splinter gets stuck in you, don’t try to go after it with pliers or needles. Instead, try this great-grandparents’ day hack: Fill a hot water bottle almost to the top. Press the splinter over the mouth of the bottle and let the steam and suction lift the wood from your skin.
2. Separate The Glasses With Some Science
You’ve probably gone through the trouble of having glasses stuck, and separating them can be a disaster. However, here we show you how to do it using a little science. You must first place the lower glass in a bowl of warm water. Then fill the upper glass with cold water and voila, they separate immediately.
3. Smokers And Campers Everywhere Can Rejoice
For many it is frustrating trying to light a match when you are outside and the wind is blowing. Luckily, there is a simple trick to make it easier. You should only divide the wood closest to the head of the match into small strips, leaving the ends together. Once the head is lit, all the chips will also ignite, creating a stronger, harder-to-extinguish flame.
4. Stay Safe When Cleaning Broken Glass
If glass breaks, it’s important to make sure you get each piece to protect yourself and others. Don’t use a broom, as you will only water the glass around the floor. Instead, use a damp cloth to clean up all the fragments, preferably one that you can throw away.
5. Take out the ink from clothes and fabric with milk
Have you ever gotten ink from a ballpoint pen on your favorite shirt and thought it was the end? Well, quickly place that shirt in a bowl with milk, this will lift the stain from the fabric, leaving the place clean and without stains. Then, just put it to wash on the normal cycle.
6. Prevent Your Glasses From Fogging Up With A Simple Daily Routine
If your lenses evaporate in the heat of the bathroom or when you go to a warm place, make a lens protector with a regular bar of soap. You just have to rub the lenses with soap. Then gently wipe with a cloth. Repeat the operation daily to keep them clean.
7. Take Out The Rogue Nails Stuck In The Wall
Removing nails stuck in the wall is often a long and frustrating process. The use of tweezers is not always effective. To maximize the strength of the pliers, place a small block of wood or other object under the pliers for support when removing the nail.
8. Keep Your Furniture Shining With This DIY Furniture Polisher
If you have wooden furniture or other wood surfaces at home, it would be a good idea to polish it from time to time. Here’s how to make your own furniture polish. You just have to mix paraffin wax with vinegar in equal proportion. And if you want you can add a couple of drops of perfumed oil, to obtain a perfumed solution.
9. Remove Salt Stains From Your Boots
Anyone living in a cold climate will tell you that winter streets damage your clothes. Especially, road salt stains your boots or other items. But if you want to eliminate them, with a little baking soda and two tablespoons of hot milk will be enough. Then polish with wax to make your shoes shine again.
10. Remove The Eyelashes The Old Way
An eyelash or grain of sand in the eye can not only ruin the day, it can also be dangerous. Foreign objects in the eye signify the possibility of an infection or scratching your cornea. To remove the object, you must place a drop of oil in the corner of the affected eye and you will see how it adheres to the oil, immediately relieving the discomfort.
11. Chop up a few thin slices of toasted bread
It can be difficult trying to cut a loaf of bread, especially if you want thin slices. But there is no need to fight! Just dip a knife into hot water and cut quickly while the metal is still hot.
12. Revitalize Your Faded Flowers With Almost Effort
If you have a vase of flowers that have started to age, there is an easy way to liven them up. Place them in hot water until cool. Then trim the ends and put them back in cold water. They will look fresh in minutes.
13. Cooking Perfect Potatoes
If you want to improve your potatoes in an easy way, try this way of doing it. You just have to add a little sugar to the water while it boils. When the potatoes are soft, drain the water and return the pot to the stove for a few minutes, shaking occasionally. And you will get perfectly textured potatoes!
14. Caring for a Sprain At Home
There is no doubt that sprains are annoying and painful, but fortunately they are not of greater care. To cure it, lift the limb that has been twisted up on a pillow and wrap it in wet bandages. Keep them constantly wet by running a bandage from the limb to a jug of water. Then let gravity do the trick of moving the water down the sprain.
15. Make Your Candle The Perfect Size For Any Support
In this day and age, candles are generally for decoration, not light. But that doesn’t mean it’s not frustrating when they’re too big and won’t fit in candle holders. To cut a candle to size, simply soak it in some hot water until the wax becomes smooth, then press it into the holder for a secure fit.
16. Don’t Throw Broken Eggs
By now we’ve all perfected egg control at the supermarket – we open the box and flip each egg to make sure there are no cracks. Fortunately, if you have a cracked egg, there is no need to throw it away. To prevent broken eggs from dripping, dip them in a boiling pot, add a little vinegar to the water and voila! Hard boiled eggs without waste.
17. Keep Tension Off Your Wrist When Carrying A Full Jug
Taking a jug of water or other liquid the wrong way can damage your wrist and lead to a spill or worse, broken glass. To carry the jugs safely, use the old trick that waiters and waitresses still use. Just hold the top of the handle and place your thumb on the rim of the jug to support the weight.
18. Clean All Debris From Bottles
Lots of people reuse or recycle bottles these days, but you’ll want to make sure they’re completely clean before doing so. To rinse off any sticky residue from the inside of a bottle, fill it with soap, water, and a little sand. Then shake it really well so that the sand scrapes off the sticky substance inside, leaving it clean and ready for reuse.
19. We’ve All Needed This Trick Ever Since The Rings Were Invented
This one might be a bit more popular, but it’s still useful. If you ever try to remove the ring and find that it is stuck, simply coat your hand with some soap. Once the soap gets between the ring and your skin, it will slide off easily.
20. Use A Safety Pin If You Don’t Have A Needle
In a pinch, safety pins can replace certain types of needles (usually the large type used for sewing yarn or elastics). Simply pin the pin through the material you are going to thread and push everything through the fabric. It’s an easy way to do a sewing job in an emergency.
21. Get Cold Wine In A Moment
If you need to chill the wine quickly, wrap it in a thick cloth like flannel and put it in a tub of cold water. Wait about ten minutes and you will have cold wine, ready to drink. By the way, the modern version of college, is to wrap it in damp paper towels and place it in the freezer.
22. Open The Lids Of The Pots With A Clasp And A Tack
If you need to keep the lid on a broken pot while cooking, take Grandma’s advice. Use a wooden clip (not plastic – it will melt!) And a thumbtack to hold the lid. Push the tack into one side of the clothespin and clip it onto the lid of the pot, face down.
23. Corks A Noisy Door
There is nothing more annoying than a door banging with every passing draft. To reduce noise, put a couple of wine corks in the recesses in the door frame. Use a little glue to hold them in place, then close the door until they’re dry. Now you will have some peace and quiet (and an additional use for your corks).
24. Use Salt Water To Avoid Garments Fade
Modern washing machines are a bit more sensitive than those that were used before. But, there is still a chance that shiny fabrics will fade. Especially clothes that have been dyed at home, even t-shirts designed with markers or dyed items. However, you can avoid this by just soaking them in water with two large handfuls of salt for 24 hours.
25. Build A Fire Without Using Wood
If you need to light a fire in a camp but don’t have firewood, paper is a good alternative. Twist the paper around itself into long sticks or tubes. This will help ignite, even if the fire is a little bare.
26. Remove Mud Stains From Clothes With Raw Potatoes
Mud stains are the worst. Since apart from being difficult to remove, you cannot put muddy clothes in the washing machine or you will run the risk of damaging them. To remove mud, before washing it, rub the stains with peeled potatoes. Then wash normally and make sure you dump the potato.
27. Get rid of phlegm
We are a bit skeptical on this issue. However, no one is exempt. This old cure for colds (and mucus buildup in the throat) involves inhaling salt through your nose. Yes, as you read it, puffing salt through your nose. Followed by a quick gargle with warm water.
28. Place Corks In Tight Bottles
Sometimes a cork gets lost and you need to replace a spare one you have on hand. After all, you don’t want your wine to go bad. But, if the replacement cork is too big for the bottle, just compress it by rolling it with the sole of the shoe. If you are paranoid about germs, try doing it on a table under a cutting board.
29. Keep Bolts And Nuts Extra Secure
This one might have a niche audience these days, but it’s still useful advice. If you have a screw that is a bit loose, drill a hole and insert a bent pin. It will keep the screw nice and tight.
30. Ditch The Weather App To Get An Old-fashioned Efficient Forecast
We are a bit used to smartphones these days. And if you find yourself without cell service, you can quickly know the weather forecast. You just have to look at the sky to see what weather is coming. Watch the clouds on the horizon: if they gradually get bigger, rain is probably on the way, but if they get smaller, a sunny day awaits you.
31. Now You Have No Excuse Not To Send A Bouquet To Your Mother On Mother’s Day
Do you need an easy way to keep your flowers looking fresh and beautiful for a long time? Even better, send flowers by mail? Then poke holes in raw potatoes and insert flower stalks. They will stay fresh and beautiful for up to a week.
32. Prevent Heavy Objects From The Top From Falling
If you have fragile items around the house, like vases, you probably don’t want them to fall over in a careless moment. Add a little sand to better distribute the weight. You can also use stones or pieces to fix them with the weight.
33. Keep Your Grandma’s Lace Doilies Fresh And White
In this day and age, most people don’t have real lace. But if you have a gorgeous lace family heirloom that is starting to fade, there is an easy way to make it look white and sparkly. Placing the lace on white paper and apply a little magnesium oxide powder on it. Cover it with more white paper and let it sit for a few days until it shines again.
34. Make a Bandage for Minor Accidents
If you have a foot injury, you will need a bandage to stay firmly in place. Use a gauze roll or a cotton bandage to roll your foot and ankle, alternating around each in a figure of eight. Then fasten with a safety pin.
35. Get rid of old stumps in your yard
Do you have a stump in your garden that doesn’t die? Drill some holes in the top of it. Then peel the crust off the sides and drill the holes there too. Fill the holes with rock salt and let it soak in the wood.
36. You Don’t Need To Give Your Neighbor A Key While On Vacation
The next time you need your indoor plants to be watered while you’re away, there’s no need to make plans for someone to do it. Fill a bucket with water and place it on a chair, then gather the plants on the floor. Loosely braid several strings of yarn together. Separate the twine braids from the bucket to each plant.
37. Use A Pillowcase To Remove Dust From The Ceiling Fan
You probably don’t look at your ceiling fan very often. But once you do, you will immediately notice the thick layer of sand and dirt that accumulates on the blades. Instead of struggling with a feather duster, throw a pillowcase over the blades and then pull down. You may have to dodge the path to avoid being caught in a dirt storm.
38. Use olive oil to get rid of sticky residue
Oil is excellent at breaking down stickiness. Just pour some on a cleaning cloth and rub gently. You can use any type of oil.
39. Banish Bad Weeds With Boiling Water
The boiling water will cause the weeds in your driveway to shrink and die. For best results, add a tablespoon of salt. It’s easy, effective, and there is no need to purchase any products.
40. Make Your Jewels Shine With Seltz Water
If you have gold jewelry that is starting to get dirty, combine the seltzer water with a little soap in a glass. Soak your gold for five minutes. The seltzer breaks down dirt and will make your jewelry shine.

Dad Brings Laughter With Tutorial On How To Put Baby To Sleep
He’s a husband and father first, but he’s also a funny comedy video creator. This New Zealand dad creates entertaining videos that get lots of hits because they’re downright hilarious. Jordan Watson shares parenting tips and tricks on his youtube page, with a great tongue in cheek style, that other dads (or anyone who takes care of kids) can relate to. Each video has his comedic sense of humor with a deadpan delivery, as he parodies the “how-to” videos that are popular on the internet.
Jordan Watson, from Aukland, New Zealand is a part-time landscaper, full-time dad, and viral video creator.
His first video was just a goof he put together when he was left alone with his baby, Alba. The video is titled, “How to Hold a Baby” and is currently at 3.7 million views. And that’s not even his most-watched video.
In an interview with Stuff, Watson still can’t believe the video went viral overnight,
“It was just me cutting together, in my eyes, crap – just me being an idiot and thinking that one guy at work’s going to like it.”
He chalks his success up to,
“Every parent can kind of relate, and there’s so many people out there who’re aunties, uncles, they look after people’s kids… It’s just everyday scenarios with kids which has given me the inspiration for it.”
Jordan always wears his trademark shirt and shorts or as they’re called in New Zealand, Togs.
In this video, which currently has over four million views, Jordan offers his own witty advice on how to put a baby to sleep. He lists and demonstrates a number of techniques, all with a deadpan delivery that only Jordan can muster.
Some examples are “The Hypnotist,” where dad dangles a nearby toy in front of the baby and coaxes her to sleep.
Another good one is called “The Bribe Dad.” Where dad bribes the baby to go to sleep with, “tomorrow I’ll let you climb the curtains.”
There’s, “Method Acting,” where dad pretends to be sleepy himself, and lays on the floor in order to convince the baby to sleep, too.
“The Dad That Doesn’t Know A Single Lullaby,” where Jordan mumbles and mishmashes his way through what might sound similar to some known Lullabies.
The funny thing about this video is that the real star is not Jordan.
No, it’s his baby daughter, Alba. She is such an integral part of the humor, because nearly every time Dad tries his methods, they work. The little one lays down to go to sleep, and her comedic timing is perfect. Dad administers the technique, Alba listens, and then to our rousing laughter, she complies. Leaving Jordan to say,
“It’s never really that easy.”
In Stuff, Jordan had this to say about his daughter,
“I think if you take Alba the cute baby out of it, they’re not going to do very well – it’s definitely 99 percent her, 1 percent me.”
Many Youtubers are head over heels for this video, and it’s stars.
“How the baby could understand that he is acting?”
“This child should be the highest paid child actor!”
Another Youtuber wonders,
“I don’t know if that baby is just insanely intelligent, an animatronic, a paid actor or if the dad just really knows his stuff?”
Get ready to laugh with this video. And prepare to go down the rabbit hole as “How To Dad,” Jordan Watson, has an ever-growing collection of funny videos. He feeds his followers a video a week, and probably feeds his charming family with the proceeds.
All in, he’s a really great husband and father, enjoy his funny “how-to” below!

Restaurant Adds Cute Stuffed Pandas To Help Customers During Social Distancing
The past couple of months have been tough.
Health concerns, loss of income, and not being able to socialize has been extremely frustrating.
We are social creatures after all and it is in our nature to want to spend time with one another.
I personally live with four other roommates, so getting my fill of social connection hasn’t been too hard.
But I know many people who live alone and haven’t interacted with anyone in quite a while–and it’s starting to take its toll.
Even with four people in my house, I’m still itching for some social interaction with others.
Luckily, restrictions around COVID-19 are starting to lighten up.
Although many stores and restaurants are still closed, we are starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel for this whole quarantine business.
But things are still far from normal.
Even if stores are open, you’re still required to wear a mask and keep the recommended six-foot distance from everyone else.
So when one restaurant in Thailand opened its doors for the first time in months, they had some obstacles to overcome.
Maison Saigon, a Vietnamese restaurant in Bangkok, originally planned on having only one chair at each table to promote social distancing according to Insider.
But that just wasn’t cutting it.
When the owner, Natthwut Rodchanapanthkul, saw what the restaurant looked like with only one chair per table, he wasn’t satisfied.
He told reports at Reuters, “Earlier we had only one chair for the tables where the customer came alone. But for me, it felt strange, so I thought I’d give them some company.”
But how do you give someone company at a table when you aren’t supposed to be anywhere near each other?
By bringing in big stuffed pandas of course!
The owner placed stuffed panda bears in various chairs around the restaurant to give it a more cheery and inviting vibe.
It also helped reinforce the social distancing rule according to Bored Panda.
And it worked great.
One customer told Reuters, “The doll makes me feel less lonely eating by myself.”
Another customer explained that the stuffed animals not only improved the vibe of the place, but it made seating arrangements more clear as well.
He told reporters, “It’s a lot easier to understand compared to other restaurants where people always get confused about where to sit and end up sitting too close to each other.”
Now is the time when we need to get creative about the way that we do things.
Sure the owner of Maison Saigon could have just put up a bunch of signs that told people where they could and could not sit.
But how lame would that have been?
Nothing makes tough times harder than boring rules and stiff regulations.
It takes a little fun to shake things up!
And having a meal next to a giant, cuddly, cute stuffed panda sure does lighten the mood a bit.
So if you happen to be stuck at home by yourself right now, maybe give this stuffed animal trick a try.
Put a few on your couch, a couple at the dinner table, and maybe even one out on the deck.
Whatever it takes to get through this isolation period with a little bit of sanity is worth it.
And don’t be too surprised if you find that one small panda goes a long way.
